The Red Bush Squirrel was discovered by Peters in 1852. It inhabits Mozambique, “Quintangonha”, mainland near Macambique Island. This squirrel is endemic to South Africa.

Of the Paraxerus family, it is a large squirrel. Little however is known about this squirrel. They are sometimes also known by the names “Red-bellied Coast Squirrel” or “Tonga Red Squirrel”.

It is considered to be a vulnerable species.
