The Long-tailed Forest Shrew is currently listed as a vulnerable species (2003), and this particular species of shrew is also endemic to South Africa. The Long-tailed Forest Shrew was first reported in 1978 by Meester and Dippenaar.

They are from the Crocidurinae family of shrews, belonging to the genus Myosorex. Shrews of this genus are Mouse Shrews.

There has been little research carried out on the Long-tailed Forest Shrew.
